Take a little time for you

In 2009, I made the difficult decision to give up my full time job in order to spend more time at home – my 3 children, who were 11, 6 and 4 at the time, needed their mother. The ominous 11+ and 13+ exams were looming and I recognised my responsibility in helping them prepare, both practically but also emotionally.

However, it soon became clear that I would need something of my own to sustain me through these times, a project of sorts.

So I joined the gym. I know, an obvious first choice perhaps, but one with both physical and mental benefits. I soon felt a great sense of achievement as I saw myself progress into a ‘super fit’ mum!

It seems I wasn’t the only one to turn to the gym – I met many like – minded women there, in a similar transitional phase in their lives. Whilst it was comforting to know that I wasn’t alone and we were all in the same boat, I still couldn’t shake a nagging sense that there was more I could, and should, be doing – that I wasn’t living to my full potential.

Whilst I still held firm to my original decision and commitment to see my youngest through the Herculean trials of the 11+ exams, I made an internal agreement to heed the call of my instincts and started to keep my eyes and ears open for any new business opportunities that lit me up.

In 2012, the call came…or rather, wafted in with the sweet scent of home fragrances! I had always been disappointed with the limited options that were available on the market at the time. Most affordable candles were toxic and bad for the environment, whilst natural wax candles were not only rare but also expensive. Diffusers weren’t much better, evaporating so quickly I always felt cheated.

And so, the time had come. Whilst my children were doing their homework, I was doing some of my own…I began to research the home fragrance industry. I was determined to find an alternative way of producing candles from only 100% natural wax, which did not harm the environment or contribute to deforestation. As a mother myself, I had to respect Mother Earth in my business venture!

It took many months of trial and error until I finally found my perfect formula: I discovered that I did not need to use palm/soy wax, paraffin wax or bees wax and could add a much higher percentage of essential oils, giving Spry candles the unique property of fragrancing a room even when unlit!

A special blend of fragrances and reed sticks soon followed, resulting in reed diffusers that lasted far longer than any others I could find on the market. I was on a roll!

Before I knew it, I had cracked the mainstay of my business by creating core products I could be proud of. But the ideas kept coming. They say that ‘Necessity is the mother of Invention’ and I wanted to find solutions for the practical issues that came up when using these sorts of products in a domestic setting. My time at home with the kids meant I was all too familiar with the daily inevitability of mishaps! First in line was preventing spillages from diffusers. The Hanging Reed Diffuser was born, eliminating the chance of pets or young children knocking them over. They also work wonderfully next to the toilet roll holder (for obvious reasons…!)

I have remained committed to these small but significant innovations, making Spry products as convenient as possible to use. 2017 saw the introduction of the Spry Car Perfume, which received a great reception from our customers. And the trouble-shooting continues into 2020, so watch out for a solution for lighting candles….
