We hope that everyone who receives a Spry candle will enjoy the burn, the aroma and the rituals that will help you make the very most of every candle.

Please follow these care and usage instructions to avoid disappointment or mishap.

Candle Care ~

It’s a two-way thing.

CANDLE STORAGE

To preserve your candle’s condition and scent, store it in an upright position and avoid direct sunlight or heat.

A ‘frosting’ or ‘sweat’ causing droplets on the top of the candle is a normal characteristic of a natural wax candle, especially if it is fragrance-rich. Be assured, it will not affect the quality or burn of your candle.

NOTE ~ Avoid extreme temperature changes to control fragrance sweating. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Using Candles Properly ~

There is such a thing as the perfect candle burn.

It gives the best scent, the most picturesque and level, glowing melt pool, and it returns value on every gram of wax.

UNDERSTANDING A NEW CANDLE

Your new candle has some spare wick at the top and maybe some oil at the top of the candle.

NOTE ~ The wick should be trimmed before burning and the oil is a sign of a richly-fragranced candle. Oil leakage like this can be avoided by keeping the candle upright. See Lighting a new candle

CLEAN CANDLES

You can enjoy the glow of melting wax through the clear glass of our jars, but only if the candle is prepared and positioned correctly.

Follow the guidance below to avoid sooting and other candle pitfalls.

NOTE ~ Sooting is easily removed with a tissue once the candle has cooled.

POSITIONING YOUR CANDLES

Place burning candles at least 10cm (4in) apart from one another to prevent improper burning.

Place burning candles away from drafts, vents and fans to reduce uneven burning and avoid flame flare-ups.

These steps are key to achieving the longest possible burn time for each candle.

NOTE ~ After a few hours of burning in a poor position, sooting may occur on the glass. This is easily removed with a tissue when the candle has cooled. It also indicates that your wick may need trimming back to 3mm.

LIGHTING A NEW CANDLE

Carefully trim the candle wick to 3mm, using sharp clippers.

This ritual is key to achieving the longest possible burn time for each candle.

NOTE ~ If you trim a wick too short, the flame will be too small for a clean and successful burn. You can rescue the candle by removing some wax from the top of the candle, levelling it to a smooth top where the wick is at 3mm or more.

BURNING CANDLES

Your candle should burn steadily and without smoke.

NOTE ~ If a candle smokes, or flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high, it isn’t burning properly and the flame isn’t controlled. Extinguish it with a snuffer and allow the candle to cool. Follow the resetting guidance to prepare the candle for the next burn.

SNUFFING CANDLES

Use a candle snuffer or the candle lid to extinguish a candle.

NOTE ~ Blowing may splatter hot wax and water may cause hot wax to splatter or the glass container to break.

RESETTING AFTER EACH BURNING

Before your melted wax re-sets, gently re-centre the wick if it has moved, and use a small spoon or spatula to re-scoop the soft wax into a new, flat beginning.

This is a candle enthusiast’s greatest ritual and gives you the best value possible for every burn and each candle.

NOTE ~ These rituals are key to achieving the longest possible burn time for each candle.

IDEAL BURNING TIME

3 to 4 hours burn-time allows the wax to heat up to the edges of the candle, avoiding a ‘pillaring effect’ resulting in tunnels.

NOTE ~ A shorter burn will cause uneven candles, however, Spry wax is uniquely soft and enables you to reshape it even after it re-sets.

RE-LIGHTING CANDLES

Re-trim the candle wick to 3mm and gently re-centre it each time before burning.

NOTE ~ Oversized or crooked wicks will cause uneven burning and smoking.

Burning Candles Safely ~

Please enjoy your candle and burn safely, always.

FOLLOW THIS GUIDANCE FOR SAFETY

Be safe and present at all times.

Always keep a burning candle within sight.

Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

Always burn candles in a well-ventilated, but not breezy, room.

Keep burning candles away from all flammable materials, including drapes, bedding, carpets, and paper.

Be sure the candle is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent heat damage to tables and cracking of glass containers.

Do not place your candle on the metal lid during burning.

Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.

Make sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.

Never extinguish candles with water. Water may cause hot wax to splatter or the glass container to break.

Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains. This will prevent possible heat damage to surfaces or the container itself.

Do not pour melted wax down the drain as it may cause a blockage.

Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets, and away from where they could be knocked over.
